Storm-Rising by Christopher Martinez © 2010

“Storm Rising” was planned about thirty miles before I arrived at the spot where I took this shot. I saw the rain mist on my windshield and immediately sped up to 75 mph in hopes that I would get to my destination before the monsoon rain would drench the thirsty red Abiquiu Mesa beneath the full clouds. Upon arrival, I quickly set up my equipment, and in seconds, the heavens released a downpour right above my head causing flash floods all around me.

Slumber by Christopher Martinez © 2010

“Slumber” was an image that came to me in a sea of fiery autumn colors while I was hiking atop Santa Fe Baldy near Santa Fe, New Mexico. I looked up and saw these aspen leaves beginning to turn as the tree was preparing for a long winter’s nap. The fall season is my favorite time of year, I enjoy being outdoors and taking in all that my five senses can handle before the winter takes the colors away and we are left to look at a snowy and monochromatic world.

Plates by Christopher Martinez © 2010

“Old Plates” is an artistic and creative use of recycling material to cover up the gaps in the back of an old work shed in the little village of Gusano, New Mexico. This is a testament to the viejos who taught many of us that with a bit of ingenuity and thought, solutions can be made with what you’ve got. I was very impressed with the way they were placed onto the shed and how over the years, the elements had taken their toll on the paint to give this piece it’s character.

Pecos-Burning by Christopher Martinez © 2010

“Pecos Burning” is the sister to “God’s Painted”. The two images were taken at the same time next to the Rio Grande Gorge near Taos, New Mexico. I was so amazed by the full spectrum of colors that God presented to so many people that I had to stop at that very moment and record it for all time. I love to photograph sunsets and sunrises simply because I believe these are moments when God is painting for all of us to wonder in his glory in real time.

Nambe-Serenity by Christopher Martinez © 2010

“Nambe Serenity” is atop a small mountain in Nambe, New Mexico. This cross is a regular resting point during the Holy Week Pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayo. I visit it often when I travel north to visit my parents. I like to hike to the top and say a prayer of thanks to God for all the wonderful gifts I have been given and the treasures I have been entrusted with. When I take the time to stand on this holy ground, I feel as though God has my full attention.
